East gATE BROADCASTING
CHRISTIAN RADIO ON EASTERN LONG ISLAND
“And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the east gate.” Ezekiel 43:4
OUR VISION
The Community Bible Church (CBC) in Sag Harbor, NY (a Calvary Chapel Fellowship) has a unique opportunity to bring Christian Radio to the East End of Long Island that could eventually reach a large part of Eastern Suffolk County and even parts of Southern CT. We see this happening in three phases, one of which is already completed.
PHASE 1 - THE TRANSLATORS 93.3 & 93.9 FM
So far we have completed phase 1 by setting up two translators on the South Fork of Long Island. One of these translators is in Sag Harbor on 93.3 FM and one is in Montauk on 93.9 FM. (The locations look similar to the picture above.) A translator is not a radio station, rather it rebroadcasts an existing radio station. In this case we are rebroadcasting WCSE 107.3 FM (aka WNLN) from Niantic CT, which is owned and operated by Calvary Chapel South Eastern CT. (Click here for for more information about WCSE. Click here for more information about Calvary Chapel South Eastern CT.)
WCSE has a great line up of Bible teaching & Christian music, however, the coverage is limited and because we are picking up WCSE from across the Long Island Sound the signal sometimes experiences unwanted interference. Having our own radio station would clear up these problems and allow us to create and choose our own programming. That’s where phase 2 comes in.
PHASE 2 - WEGB MONTAUK
The Community Bible Church has been granted a Construction Permit by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to build a non-commercial radio station. The radio studio will be located at the offices of the CBC in Sag Harbor and the signal will originate from a radio tower in Montauk. The call letters of the station will be WEGB and the broadcast frequency will be 90.7 FM. WEGB will be a full power station broadcasting between 6000 & 12000 watts. This signal will be much more powerful than our two translators which are only about 27 watts each! The signal coverage will look like the map shown above with WEGB 90.7 FM in Montauk (1252650.A) feeding our radio translator, 93.3 FM in Sag Harbor (W227AN). The red and orange areas are where the signal will be strongest. The green areas are where the signal can be heard on a car radio. Once WEGB is up and running we will no longer need our translator in Montauk and so we will either sell it or continue to rebroadcast WCSE.
WHY WEGB?
We chose the call letters WEGB because the more obvious choices were taken such as WCBC, and we wanted to find letters that stood for something meaningful. In the Old Testament book of Ezekiel 43:4 we read “And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the east gate.” Montauk is the most Eastern town on Long Island and in a sense the East Gate of Long Island. It is our desire that Jesus Christ be glorified by this radio project and that His glory would flood Long Island through the East Gate!
PROGRAMMING
Programming on WEGB will include our own CBC produced programs such as Bible teaching programs; live call in shows; live broadcasts of our services, concerts and other events; and programs about, and that serve, the local community. We will also include Bible teaching programs from local like-minded churches; other Calvary Chapels; other denominations and para-church ministries; Kid’s programs such as Focus on the Family’s Adventures in Odyssey; Christian music of all genres; and programs in foreign languages such as Spanish & Portuguese.
WEGB will be a non-commercial station, that is, programs can be underwritten but we cannot sell advertisements. We can however charge to air programs which will help pay for the ongoing cost of running the station.
SHARING AGREEMENT
The only way we could acquire the Construction Permit from the FCC to build WEGB was to agree to share the ‘frequency’ (90.7 FM) with another entity called Hamptons Community Radio (HCR). This is not unheard of, for example, some college radio stations share a frequency. CBC & HCR will not be sharing radio studios and HCR will broadcast with their own call letters (WEER). Both entities have until the Fall of 2011 to build their station. Whoever builds first will will be allowed to broadcast full time if the other has a long delay in building. CBC & HCR have agreed to offer each other the right of first refusal in the event that one of them decides to sell their FCC license. It should be noted that CBC & HCR are not associated in any way.
THE BROADCAST TIMES
Monday - Friday
CBC will broadcast from 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM
HCR will broadcast from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM
CBC will broadcast from 7:00 PM - 6:00 AM

HRC will broadcast from 6:00 AM - Midnight
Sunday
CBC will broadcast from Midnight - Midnight
PHASE 3: A Second Station in Riverhead
CBC has applied to the FCC to obtain a Construction Permit to build a 2nd radio station in the Riverhead area that will broadcast on 91.7 FM. If awarded this station our signal will cover a good portion of Eastern Suffolk County and it will look like the coverage map below.
A number of entities have applied for this same frequency. Please pray that CBC will be awarded this Construction Permit!
THE COST
We have estimated that it will cost approximately $100,000 to get WEGB on the air. This will include the one time costs of building the radio studio; purchasing the equipment that needs to go on the tower and the various fees for permits, tower climbers, and legal filings. This does not include the ongoing costs of keeping the radio station running. We plan to pay for these ongoing costs through donations and charging for program air time.
Christian Radio is a very powerful tool to spread the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ. Doug Kinney, pastor of the Community Bible Church became a Christian while listening to such teachers as Chuck Smith, Raul Ries, Greg Laurie, & Walter Martin on Christian Radio! Will you help us reach out to the East End of LI with Christian Radio?
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. Pray for this project to come to fruition.
2. Give a financial gift. Help us reach our goal of raising $100,000.
3. Help us with fundraising. Have an idea? Let us know!
4. Donate materials to help build the studio. We need: lumber, sheet-rock, insulation, electrical supplies, carpet, paint, audio equipment, microphones, monitor speakers, computer equipment. (Most material donations are tax deductible for the fair market value.)
5. Donate your time and talent to help build the studio: carpentry, electrical, audio, dry-wall, flooring, carpet installation, painters, furniture building, (we could use a custom made desk for the radio equipment.)
If you would like to give towards this project please earmark your offering “WEGB.” Checks should be made payable to Community Bible Church. East Gate Broadcasting is a ministry of the Community Bible Church. All donations are tax deductible.
